## Reference and reusable technique

- [LemoLab / lemo-opuscar](https://github.com/lemomo-ai/lemo-opuscar), newsreel style and demo composition. Local source snapshot is in `source/`; upstream MIT notice is retained in `source/LICENSE-upstream`.
- [Original released newsreel MP4](https://github.com/lemomo-ai/lemo-opuscar/releases/download/films/newsreel.mp4): **Knock-Knee Alert**, 1920×1080, 24 fps, 1,310 decoded frames. Stored in `reference/newsreel.mp4`. SHA-256: `81e54ec0612d7fda0b043cfc704cf117932986b10d048da919109a0c247f0be2`.
- The upstream README licenses demo films/stills under **CC BY 4.0**, crediting **LemoLab** with a repository link. The reference video is retained unchanged; the new films are explicitly identified as adaptations of the visual method.
- Reference is retained for comparison. Its narration, soundtrack, Ford footage, original dance photographs, and story-specific claims are not reused in either new film.
- Shared drawing helpers, globe/searchlights, silver type, film-look mathematics, title-strip layout and intertitle construction derive from the MIT demo, adapted to two new stories. This is an explicit adaptation and reuse, not a claim that these methods were invented here.

## Historical picture sources

The four historical films below are United States films first published in 1903 or 1905. The source images are public-domain archive footage. The Library of Congress describes and preserves them; downloadable MP4 mirrors were obtained through Internet Archive. Modern transfer title cards and any added soundtrack are excluded from the new works. Complete downloaded source files are retained in `raw/`; metadata snapshots are in `source/`.

| Local file | Film and catalogue | Download mirror | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| `raw/elevated.mp4` | [Elevated railroad, New York (1903)](https://www.loc.gov/item/00694393/) | [Internet Archive transfer](https://archive.org/details/loc-film-00694393-elevated-railroad-new-york) | Front-platform views of elevated tracks and the city. |
| `raw/subway.mp4` | [Interior N.Y. subway, 14th St. to 42nd St. (1905)](https://www.loc.gov/item/00694394/) | [Internet Archive transfer](https://archive.org/details/loc-film-00694394-interior-n-y-subway-14th-st-to-42nd-st) | Train-following camera and underground route; the transfer's embedded side bars are cropped at composition time. |
| `raw/chutes.mp4` | [Shooting the chutes, Luna Park, Coney Island (1903)](https://www.loc.gov/item/00563608/) | [Internet Archive transfer](https://archive.org/details/loc-film-00563608-shooting-the-chutes-luna-park-coney-island) | Tower, incline, boats and splash; source interval 21–92 seconds. |
| `raw/rube.mp4` | [Rube and Mandy at Coney Island (1903)](https://www.loc.gov/item/00694289/) | [Internet Archive transfer](https://archive.org/details/loc-film-00694289-rube-and-mandy-at-coney-island) | Edison staged comedy and amusement-park views. Explicitly identified as performed comedy, not candid reportage. |

Exact selected ranges, source hashes, crop treatment, and fixed percentile grade are recorded in each `shared/frames/<source>/manifest.json`. Each film's `timeline.json` records the final source in-points and frame intervals. No source audio is mixed into either new film.

## Print and map

- [Interborough Rapid Transit: The New York Subway, Its Construction and Equipment (1904)](https://archive.org/details/interboroughrapi00interich). Public-domain source book. Individual JP2 pages were extracted from the digitization's ZIP using HTTP byte ranges and converted to JPEG. Selected leaves 11, 25, 35, 55 and 85 contain the title/emblem, company history, City Hall loop plan, construction pictures and power-house construction. The real **IRT** mark is preserved and visibly legible; it is not a newly invented logo. The film is unofficial.
- [Smithsonian catalogue record for the IRT book](https://www.si.edu/object/interborough-rapid-transit-new-york-subway-its-construction-and-equipment-new-york-interborough%3Asiris_sil_5844).
- Manhattan outline: [NYC DCP public geodata converted to GeoJSON by dwillis/nyc-maps](https://github.com/dwillis/nyc-maps/blob/master/boroughs.geojson), with [NYC's source dataset description](https://data.cityofnewyork.us/City-Government/Borough-Boundaries/gthc-hcne). The film labels its route a schematic. The outline orients the viewer; it is not presented as a surveyed 1904 shoreline.
- The second film's paper/photo layouts contain **stills extracted from the identified films**, not invented postcards or fabricated historical documents.

## Factual anchors

- [New York Transit Museum: Subway Day](https://www.nytransitmuseum.org/subway-day/): the first subway opened on October 27, 1904, with 28 stations and 9.1 miles of route.
- [Tenement Museum: first underground subway](https://www.tenement.org/blog/on-this-day-1904-first-underground-subway/): the opening route ran from City Hall through Grand Central and Times Square to 145th Street.
- [Museum of the City of New York: Ghosts on the 6 Train](https://www.mcny.org/story/ghosts-6-train): the five-cent fare and construction history.
- [LOC subway film description](https://www.loc.gov/item/00694394/): filmed in 1905, after the 1904 opening; a specially constructed car on the parallel track provided lighting; the journey reaches the old Grand Central station. The present terminal opened in 1913. The new film keeps opening date, filming date and terminal replacement distinct.
- Coney Island claims are limited to visible mechanics, the 1903 catalogue dates, the named film titles and the explicitly staged character of the Edison comedy. Commentary about anticipation and memories is editorial interpretation, not a numerical historical claim.

## New sound and fonts

- English TTS: Kokoro ONNX v1.0, male style blend `am_liam:0.6,bm_george:0.4`, native synthesis speed 1.18. Original newly written scripts; cached per-line WAV files and synthesis fingerprints are retained. Recorded speech is not post-hoc time-stretched.
- Score: two original MIDI themes at 200 BPM; tuba, banjo, trombone, brass, clarinet, piano and percussion. No reference melody or audio recording is copied. `tools/score.py` and each `audio/score.mid` contain the notes.
- GeneralUser GS soundfont: retained license in `shared/audio/GeneralUser-LICENSE.txt`.
- Limelight, Oswald, Noto Sans SC, Noto Serif SC: retained OFL notices in `shared/fonts/`. Browser CJK fonts are subsets of the same original fonts, made only to reduce loading cost.
- New Foley and projector bed are synthesized by `tools/mix.py`.

- [Kokoro v1.0 model](https://huggingface.co/hexgrad/Kokoro-82M), Apache 2.0; local model card in `source/Kokoro-model-card.md` and license in `shared/models/LICENSE-Kokoro-Apache-2.0.txt`. [Kokoro ONNX implementation](https://github.com/thewh1teagle/kokoro-onnx) is MIT.
- Independent speech check: [OpenAI Whisper](https://github.com/openai/whisper) and [whisper.cpp](https://github.com/ggml-org/whisper.cpp), MIT. The base.en conversion comes from [ggerganov/whisper.cpp](https://huggingface.co/ggerganov/whisper.cpp); model and MIT notice are retained in `shared/models/`. ASR is diagnostic, not a subjective listening review.
